DAY 11/365: STOP GIVING EXCUSES

“When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.”

Cliché. Tapi ada truth di situ.

Tengok diri.

Berapa banyak “lemon” yang dah jadi alasan?

“Tak ada masa.” “Anak kecil lagi.” “Busy sangat.” “Nanti bila dah settled.”

Lemon jadi excuse. Bukan lemonade.

Orang yang move forward?

They don’t have less lemons.

They reframe the lemon.

MY LEMONADE STORY

Orang lain punya lemon: Baby bangun malam = Sleep deprived = Tak productive = Can’t work on goals

My lemonade: Baby bangun 3 pagi = Natural alarm clock = Quiet time before chaos = Write. Study. Think.

This is one of the perks of being a mother.

Orang complain baby disrupt sleep. Saya guna baby as my writing time.

Orang kata “kena tunggu baby besar baru boleh focus.” Saya tak tunggu.

Baby bangun, I bangun. Baby tidur balik, I kerja.

1-2 jam sehari. Cukup.

Sebab bila you stop making excuses, 1 jam pun jadi productive.

REFRAME EXAMPLES

Lemon: “Commute 2 jam = buang masa” Lemonade: “Commute 2 jam = audiobook university, self-development on wheels”

Lemon: “WFH dengan anak kacau = can’t focus” Lemonade: “WFH = batch work during nap time, no commute waste, quality time breaks”

Lemon: “Overweight = malu nak start gym” Lemonade: “Overweight = biggest transformation story potential, future motivation for others”

Same situation. Different lens.

Orang lain complain. You reframe. Orang lain stuck. You move.

THE TRUTH

You’ll ALWAYS have lemons.

Baby besar, lemon lain datang. Work settled, lemon baru muncul. Business grow, lemon scale up.

Kalau you tunggu hidup tak ada lemon baru nak mula, you tak akan mula langsung.

INI BUKAN MOTIVATIONAL SPEECH. INI BACKED BY SCIENCE.

STUDY 1: REFRAMING WORKS

What they studied: 353 people learning to reframe obstacles

What they found: People who practice cognitive reframing achieved significantly better outcomes in therapy, work, and life goals. The improvement was large enough to be life-changing, not just marginal.

What this means: Reframing isn’t “just think positive.” It’s a proven technique that actually changes results.

STUDY 2: CONSTRAINTS BREED CREATIVITY

What they studied: 145 research studies on how limitations affect innovation

What they found: People working under constraints create MORE innovative solutions than people with unlimited resources.

Real example: Apollo 13 engineers saved astronauts’ lives by building a CO2 filter using only materials available onboard. The constraint forced the breakthrough.

What this means: Your “lemon” (baby disrupting sleep, tight budget, limited time) isn’t blocking you. It’s forcing you to innovate.

STUDY 3: ADVERSITY CREATES TRANSFORMATION

What they studied: People who experienced trauma, loss, or major life challenges

What they found: 50-89% of people who faced adversity reported positive growth they never would have experienced otherwise.

Five areas of growth:

  1. Stronger relationships
  2. New opportunities found
  3. Personal strength recognized
  4. Deeper appreciation for life
  5. Spiritual/philosophical change

Critical insight: This isn’t just “bouncing back” (resilience). This is going beyond where you were before. Transformation, not just survival.

What this means: Baby waking at 3 AM = your adversity. Becoming productive morning writer = your transformation. You’re not alone – this pattern happens to 50-89% of people who reframe challenges.

(Source: Post-Traumatic Growth Research – Tedeschi & Calhoun)

The pattern across all three studies?

Lemons don’t stop you. Lemons force you to level up.

That’s not hope. That’s data.

YOUR 3-MINUTE ACTION

1. List your top 3 “lemons” right now.

Apa yang you rasa blocking you dari goals?

2. Reframe EACH lemon into lemonade.

Use these prompts:

  • “Because of this, I actually have access to…”
  • “This forces me to be more creative about…”
  • “This teaches me the skill of…”
  • “This is preparation for when I…”

3. Pick ONE lemonade to action THIS WEEK.

MY EXAMPLE

Lemon 1: Anak tidur lambat = I exhausted by 10 PM Lemonade: Family time extended = deeper conversations = sleep guilt-free knowing I gave them my presence

Lemon 2: Client calls unpredictable = can’t block deep work time Lemonade: Practice flexibility = batch admin for call gaps = better at context-switching (valuable skill)

Lemon 3: Malaysian weather hot = gym feels like torture Lemonade: Home workout excuse eliminated (sama je panas) = cold shower after workout feels AMAZING = build mental toughness

Pilih satu. Action this week.

FINAL TRUTH

Orang yang berjaya bukan sebab hidup dia takde lemon.

Dia berjaya sebab dia refuse to use lemon as excuse.

Baby bangun malam?

That’s my alarm clock. That’s my writing time. That’s my perk.

What’s your lemon? What’s your lemonade?

Stop making excuses. Start making lemonade.
